Today we’re going to explore our Germany database of shopping malls and main streets. This database, compiled by our team and recently extracted for an order, contains 1,570 shopping locations. Although usually commissioned for the purpose of receiving a list of shopping sites in a geographical area, it can also be used for its statistical value.
General information on the Germany database
Categories covered: shopping malls and main streets
The commercial sites exported for this order were divided into three sub-categories:
Shopping malls: A shopping mall is a group of shops in the same place under the same roof, offering visitors the chance to walk through covered galleries. We have decided to follow the French shopping malls classification defined by the Conseil National des Centres Commerciaux (CNCC). There are two criteria that impose a minimum limit of 20 shops and 5,000m² of floor space. For our products, shopping malls in this category are all those with more than 20 shops.
Mini Malls: These are shopping malls that do not meet the above criteria, and therefore have fewer than 20 shops.
Main Streets: These are the main streets in cities. These are generally the main streets in city centres.
Distribution of categories
For Germany, our breakdown of commercial sites is as follows:
Diagram showing the distribution of commercial sites in our Germany database
With over 700 sites each, Shopping Malls and Mains Streets dominate our database almost equally across Germany.
Mini Malls are less numerous, with 104 sites in our database.
It is therefore easy to see that Germany has a greater number of shopping malls meeting CNCC criteria than mini malls offering a limited number of shops.
Statistical observations on the number of shops
In our databases, for each retail site, we provide its number of shops in the form of slices. The same applies to the total surface area and the GLA surface area. From the product we have supplied, it is therefore possible to produce the following statistics:
Diagram showing the breakdown of the number of shops in Germany by category
In the diagram above, we can see that the most common range is between 50 and 100 shops on the commercial site. What’s more, our database shows that above 200 shops, the vast majority are main streets.
Focus on Berlin
Germany’s capital city, with a population of almost 4 million, has 67 retail sites alone, including 10 Main Streets and 57 Shopping Malls.
At the top of the list of Berlin’s commercial sites, the following Main Streets stand out: Kurfürstendamm and Friedrichstraße.
Kurfürstendamm is 3.5 km long and attracts many tourists and Berliners who want to stroll through the shops. According to our database, this street is the most important shopping area in Berlin. It has more than 500 shops, with a GLA of over 200,000 m².
Indeed, www.visitberlin.de even describes it as the ” Berlin’s most popular shopping boulevard is the beating heart of the western city centre.”.
When it comes to shopping malls, the first on our list is Mall of Berlin.
Mall of Berlin contains almost 300 shops with a GLA of over 25,000 m².
